Technologically, “Who framed Roger Rabbit” was a big challenge, as there was no way to know if the action performed by the human actor matched the action of the toon actor.
But did it deliver as well as is predecessor? As it can be observed Cool World dating 6 years later than Roger Rabbit must be heavily inspired by it. In Cool World that creature is Nails and in Roger Rabbit it is Roger the Rabbit himself. Finally, both movies have an animated character companion that helps out the detective. Both of these law enforcing figures seem to have sexual undertones with the above mentioned toon females even though this doesn’t lead anywhere. Bod Hoskins plays the private detective Eddie Valiant while Brad Pitt is young detective Frank Harris. Furthermore in both films there is a detective character that tries to protect both worlds. In Roger Rabbit her name is Jessica Rabbit while in Cool World she is known as Holli Woods. In both moveis there is a dazzling female cartoon performer with dangerous curves. The setting in both films is dark and could be categorized as film noir. Both films feature a “real” world and a cartoon world. The two films are incredibly similar in terms of scenario and delivery, which makes this comparison all the more effective. Both film tried to do the same thing the difference is that Roger Rabbit was ground breaking in its kind, Cool Wolrd not so much. These are Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cool World. In order to make a proposal for my own film, that will incorporate said elements mentioned above I will look into two very representative films of the medium and compare them in order to figure out what are the techniques that made the 2D character in them appear “real” in the live action setting. That is because I feel that there is a lot of material available for this category in comparison to the 3D option which falls more under the special effects department and we haven’t touched on it quite as much. I have decided to write about incorporating 2D characters in live action film. Originally I wanted to include this comparison in my essay but since it ended up being very long I am posting it here as a standalone research post. In order to further demonstrate how effective those techniques where I am going to compare Roger Rabbit to one of its successors, Cool World the reason being that both films are extremely similar in terms of scenario and delivery.
